Swarf Machining

Introduction

The Swarf feature, also called flank milling, is used for machining fluid parts such as impellers or bladed disks (blisks). The goal of swarf milling is to produce the target surface with one cut using the entire cutting section of the tool. The geometry always uses an upper and lower curve, with further geometry selection required based on the strategy used.

Strategy - Select from one of the following swarf milling strategies.

Swarfing Options

The following options available change depending on which Strategy is selected.

  1. CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to have the tool plunge past the lower curve until it touches the floor.

    CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to turn off this option.

 

  1. CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to have the system detect and set the curves.

    CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to manually select the curves.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to switch the system detected curves (upper to lower and lower to upper).

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to leave the system detected curves.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to allow Tilt lines to be selected for use with best fit.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to turn off this option.

 

 

Geometry Selection

This section provides all of the potential geometry selections for Swarf milling. The option available change depending on the Swarfing Strategy and Swarfing Options selected.

The following options are only used with the One Way cutting method.

Tool Axis Control

General

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to dampen or reduce tool axis orientation changes.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to turn off this option.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to help reduce heavy machine movements created by pole singularity.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to turn off this option.

 

Fanning

Gouge Check

Degouging

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to enable the Gouge Allowance box and type the allowance value.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box when not defining a Gouge Allowance.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to include the Swarf Surfaces in the gouge check.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to not include the Swarf Surfaces in the gouge check.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to allow additional surfaces to be included in the gouge check. Click EllipsisButtonIcon16x16.png to enable selection mode, and select the geometry.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box when not specifying additional check surfaces.

 

 

Collision Check

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to trim the toolpath when collisions are found.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to turn off this option.

 

When Trim Tool Path is selected, the following options become available.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to include the Swarf Surfaces in the gouge check.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box to not include the Swarf Surfaces in the gouge check.

 

CheckBoxSelected.png Select this check box to allow additional surfaces to be included in the gouge check. Click EllipsisButtonIcon16x16.png to enable selection mode, and select the geometry.

CheckBoxCleared.png Clear this check box when not specifying additional check surfaces.

 

Tool Clearance Values

These values are used to define the desired clearance distance around the tool Shaft, Holder, and Arbor.
