File Types

Introduction

This topic will explain the supported file types, importing and exporting, and will go over file open options.

Supported File Types

In addition to reading and writing BobCAD files (.bbcd), the software can handle many more file types. These are referred to as Supported File Types.

The Supported File Types

Importing and Exporting

When trying to import or export with BobCAD-CAM using the File Open, Merge, or Save As commands it is important to be aware of the filters used in the dialog box. Near the bottom of either the Open or Save As dialog boxes there are options for various file types. When opening files, you will have the Files of type option and when you are saving, the option will be Save as type. These filters determine what file types display in the dialog box. By default, this is set to BobCAD Files. For any other file type, you must change the Files of type filter to either the desired file type or All Files in order to display other file types.

Important: Only the BobCAD (.bbcd) file format saves all of the CAM Job information (stock, machine setup, and feature information) that have been created on that file. When you Save As using any other file type, only the geometry in the file is saved. When creating other file types from BobCAD files, you should first save the file as a .bbcd, and then you can Save As (using a different file name) to export the geometry as another file type.

File Open Options

When opening most of the file types, there will be File Open Options available. These options will give you the ability to adjust what geometry opens and how that geometry is read.

Note: The only files that do not have the File Open Options are .stl files.

Options

Curves

While this check box is selected, all two dimensional wireframe geometry will be imported with the file.

Clearing this check box will exclude all two dimensional wireframe geometry from opening in the file.

Solids

While this check box is selected, all three dimensional solid and surface geometry will be imported with the file.

Clearing this check box will exclude all three dimensional solid and surface geometry from opening in the file.

Topology

Keep Original

While this radio button is selected, the model will be brought in as it is. Separate solids will remain as separate solids.

Make One Solid

Select this radio button to import all individual solids as one.

Dxf/Dwg

PaperSpace - some software allows the creation of two separate areas of creation; Model Space and Paper Space. This option allows the option to import the data in the paper space.

The Paper Space will be brought in along with the Model Space.

The Model Space will be brought in without the Paper Space.

  • OK - finalizes changes and opens file using the selected options.
