Trim Screen

Introduction

This topic will explain the Trim Screen function, and the optionsfound in it.This topic will also describe where to find the function,provide quick steps and an example on how to use it, and provide links to related topics.

The Trim Screen Function

The Trim Screen function is used to trim or extend a single entityperpendicular to any point or snap point of another entity.To performthe function, you select geometry in the graphics area.

To open Trim Screen:

  • In the Trim Extend groupof the Utilities ribbon, click Trim Screen.

The parameters display in the Data Entry Manager.

(Delete) - removes the highlighted item from the list.

The list box will list the entity currently selected for the function.

Second Entity

 

(Delete) - removes the highlighted item from the list.

This list box will show the entity currently selected for the function.

  • OK - has no use with this function.

  • Cancel - cancels the functionwhen finished.

Quick Steps - Trim Screen

  1. Open the function.

    The First Entity list automatically has focus.

  2. Select the first entity.

    The entity is added to the First Entity list.

    The Second Entity list is automatically given focus.

  3. Move your mouse in the graphics area to see the preview update based on your mouse position.

    Click in the graphics area to set the Second Entity, which is just the location of the mouse.

    The function is automatically executed.

    The First Entity list is automatically give back focus to allow the function to be repeated.

  4. Click Cancel to close the function.

Example

The Trim Extend Screen function is used to trim an entity based on thelocation that you click in the graphics area.You first select the entityto trim, then click a location in the graphics area to trim the entityperpendicular to the point that you click.

For this example, you can sketch any wireframe geometry in the graphicsarea to use with the following steps.

  1. In the Trim Extend groupof the Utilities ribbon, click Trim Screen.

    The Trim Screen parameters display in the Data Entry Manager.

  2. In the image below we have a spline, line, and an arc.

    Hover over the line to highlight it, and click to select it.Take note of where you are selecting it from.



    The line is added to the First Entity list, the focus is shifted to the Second Entity list, and the preview appears.

  3. Move your mouse slightly to the right of the selection point.



  4. Click to trim the line.



    The line is trimmed, and focus returns to the First Entity list.

    Notice the preview appears only on the side of the line that is kept.The portion which will be trimmed is only highlighted.

  5. Press Ctrl+Z to undo this trim.



    The action is undone.

  6. Attempt to select the line in the same location, and move to the left this time before clicking.



  7. Hover over the arc, and select it.



    The arc is added to the First Entity list, the Second Entity list is given focus, and the preview appears.

  8. Move your mouse around, and notice you do not need to be one the selected entity to perform the function.



    When the mouse is off of the entity, the trim point is always perpendicular from the entity.

  9. Click your mouse to trim the arc.



    The arc is trimmed.

  10. Select the spline.



  11. Move above the spline, and notice the preview does not extend beyond it.



  12. Move your mouse down and trim the spline.



  13. Select the line again, and move your mouse beyond it.



    Notice that while splines cannot be extended with this functions, lines can.Arcs can also be extended.

  14. Click past the end of the line to extend it.



  15. To end the function, in the Data EntryManager, click Cancel.
