Extract Edges from Solid

Introduction

This topic will explain the Extract Edges from Solid function, describe where to find it, and the options found in it. This topic will also provide quick steps on how to use it, and provide links to related topics.

The Extract Edges from Solid Function

The Extract Edges from Solid function allows you to select one or more solids or surfaces to extract the edges and create wireframe curves. This function uses whole solid picking and extracts all edges of the selected solids or surfaces. To extract edges using single selection, use Extract Edges Single.

Tip: It is helpful to create a new layer and set it as the Active layer, before opening the function, to create the extracted curves on the separate layer. Otherwise, you must hide, move, or delete the original geometry to seethe curves.

To open Extract Edges from Solids:

  • In the Utilities group, of the Create 2D ribbon, click Extract Edges From Solids.

The parameters display in the Data Entry Manager.

The Data Entry Parameters

  • Pick Whole Solid
    - surfaces are added to the Selected Geometry list one at a time.
    - entire solids are added to the Selected Geometry list at once.

(Delete) - removes the highlighted item from the Selected Geometry list.

(Delete All) - removes all entities from the Selected Geometry list.

The list will display all entities currently selected for the function.

  • Project to Z Plane
    - the extracted edges retain their exact position.
    - the extracted edges are projected to a specified Z-axis coordinate of the Active UCS.

    • Z- is the Z-axis value to which the edges are extracted when using Project to Z Plane.

  • OK - finalizes the function.

  • Cancel - exits the function.

Quick Steps - Extract Edges From Solids

Tip: You may want to create a new Layer and set it as the Active layer before extracting edges. This makes it easier to hide and show layers so you can see the result.

  1. Open the function.

The Selected Geometry list automatically has focus.

  2. Click to select one or more solids, from which you want to extract the edges.

The geometry is added to the Selected Geometry list.

  3. Set the Data Entry parameters as needed.

  4. To confirm the selection, press the spacebar, or click OK.

The edges are extracted and the wireframe is created in the graphics area.

You may need to move, hide, or delete the original geometry to seethe extracted edges.

  5. To close the function, click Cancel.
