The Corner Rounding Tool

Introduction

This topic explains the tool parameters used to create a corner rounding tool in the Tool Library. The corner rounding tool is used with the Corner Rounding operation that is available in the 2 Axis Wizard. To learn about defining the tool defaults (tool holder, feeds and speeds, and tool material), view the Create/Modify Tool Dialog Box topic.

Important Note - Corner Rounding Tool Equation

When defining a corner rounding tool, the diameter must be greater than or equal to the small diameter plus twice the corner radius.

Diameter >= Small Diameter + (Corner Radius * 2)

If you enter values that do not fit this equation, an error message displays.

When defining a corner rounding tool, if the Diameter is greater than the current/default value, set the Diameter value first. This allows you to avoid receiving the error message. If the Diameter is less than the current/default value, set the Corner Radius first to avoid the error message.

Tool Parameters

The following parameters used to create a corner rounding tool. All additional tool settings (tool holder, feeds and speeds, and tool material) are explained in the Create/Modify Tool dialog box topic.

Tool Parameters

  • Diameter (1) - sets the large diameter or the upper diameter of the cutting portion of the tool.

  • Sm. Dia(Small Diameter) (2) - sets the small diameter or the lower diameter of the cutting portion of the tool. The small diameter is used when applying tool (cutter) compensation.

  • Corner Radius (3) - sets the radius of the concave portion of the tool (the cutting radius).

  • Small Diameter Length (4) - defines the additional length at the end of the radius of the small diameter. This value can be zero. When this value is greater than zero, you should adjust the depth of the operation to include this value.

  • Shaft Diameter (5) - sets the diameter of the tool shaft or the non-cutting portion of the tool.

  • Overall Length - sets the total length of the tool from top to bottom.

  • Protrusion Length - sets the distance that the tool protrudes from the tool holder when one is assigned.

  • Tool Number - sets the number of the tool in the Tool Library. When turning off automatic tool numbering in an operation, this tool number is used.
