Creating Stock Materials and Setting Feeds and Speeds

Introduction

In this tutorial you learn how to create stock materials and how to set the feed rates and spindle speeds used with the stock material when it is selected as the default. You also learn how to further define the feed rates that are used for milling features based on the tool type selected for the feature.

Example

Part 1) How to create Stock Materials

  1. To access the Stock Material Library, in the CAM tree, under Stock, or Stock for Lathe Jobs, right-click *Stock Material Name*, and click Edit.

The Stock Material Library dialog displays.

  2. To create a Material Group, in the Material Group, click Add Group.

The Add New Material Group dialog displays.

To name the group, in the Material Group Name box, type My Materials, and click OK.

  3. To add a new stock material to the group, in the Material Group, click My Materials.

In the Material List area, click Add Material.

The Stock Material Feeds and Speeds dialog displays.

  4. To name the new stock material, in the Stock Material Name box, type Material 1.

The next step is to define the spindle speeds and feed rates for Material 1.

  5. To define the spindle speeds and feed rates for Material 1, in the Tool Materials list, click HSS, and in the General Feeds and Speeds group, type the desired values.

If a tool material is not selected, the values are not stored.

  6. To create custom feeds for each tool operation, select the Customized Feeds and Speeds Based on Tool Type and Operation check box.

The parameters in this section are now available. Type the values for all desired custom feeds and speeds for each tool operation.

When finished, click OK to close the Stock Material Feeds and Speeds dialog.

The new stock material displays in the Material List of the Stock Material Library dialog.

Important: After you have created custom feeds and speeds, if you clear the Customized Feeds and Speeds Based on Tool Type and Operation check box, a dialog appears to confirm. The reason is that if you accept, all custom values are deleted and replaced with default values. To keep your custom values, leave the check box selected.

  1. To modify the material, in the Material List, click Material 1, and click Modify Material.

The Stock Material Feeds and Speeds dialog appears for you to modify the material.

In the Tool Materials group, click Add New Tool Material.

In the Add New Tool Material dialog, type Carbide, and click OK.

You can now specify all the feeds and speeds for carbide tools when using this stock material.

When finished, click OK.

Part 2) How to use the Favorites folder

In the event that you have specific stock materials that you use often, you may not want to navigate through the Material Groups each time you need to find one of them. In this case you can add them to the Favorites folder.

  1. To move the new material to the Favorites folder, in the Material Group, click My Materials.

  2. In the Material List, select Material 1, and click Move to Favorites.

  3. The Favorites folder is automatically created in the Material Group list.

Notice that the material is completely removed from the current location.

Part 3) How to set the Default Stock Material

  1. To assign a stock material as the default (which displays in the CAM Tree), in the Material List group, select the desired stock material, and click Set as Default.

All milling features created use this default stock material, for example, Material 1.

This concludes the tutorial.
