Tech Tuesday: BobCAM for Rhino V2 Deburring

Tech Tuesday is a weekly blog that addresses some of the most common questions and concerns that I hear throughout the previous week from users of BobCADā€™s CNC software. Both customers and future customers are more than welcome to leave a comment on what they would like to see covered for the following Tech Tuesday.

BobCAD-CAM now offers deburring operations in 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling operations. It is offered in BobCAD V34, BobCAM for Solidworks V9, and is now offered in our newest version BobCAM for Rhino V2. In this example, we will look at the deburring functionality in BobCAM for Rhino V2. One convenient takeaway from this is that no matter which CAD software program you are most familiar with, BobCAD, Solidworks or Rhino, our CAM system will have the same workflow.

The deburring operation, as the name suggests, is designed to roll along the sharp edges of parts in order to remove the burr/sharp corners. This operation can be applied to a wide range of parts utilizing 3-5 axis movements. This operation can identify the required edges automatically, or the user can narrow down the edges to machine with selection or by applying ranges. In this example, we will be focusing on 4-axis deburring around a cylindrical part.

First, we will open a part file that has a couple of slots around a cylindrical part. After setting up a new milling job with a 4-axis machine, we will right-click on the Machine Setup – 1 in the Milling Job and select Mill Multiaxis. Select the deburring toolpath from the options. We will skip to the tool page next and define the tool we will be using for this deburring operation.

Note: In the deburring toolpath, the tool defined needs to be spherical (eg. ball endmill, lollipop tool, etc.)

With a lollipop tool selected, we selected the solid model as the Part Surfaces selection. We left the Edge Definition selection to Auto Detect and did not exclude any edges. We then went to the Tool Axis Control tab to set the Machining Type to 4 axis (rotary) and set the axis to the rotary axis of the machine (X axis for this example. After clicking Compute, BobCAM detected all of the edges the tool could machine around this cylindrical part.

Deburring Lollipop Tool
Notice all of the edges of the inside and outside of the part the tool could deburr. It even created a toolpath around the sides of the cylindrical part. The next example is a deburring feature excluding those side edges. We created another deburring feature with the same parameters as before. The only difference is we clicked the button next to Exclude Edges and selected the side edges of the part to exclude. We clicked Compute to create the toolpath deburring only the two slots around the example part.

This new deburring functionality in BobCAD-CAM allows users to generate toolpath to break the sharp edges around a given part with ease. Just select the part, the edges to either include or exclude, the deburring tool, and the axes the tool will be rotating about for the deburring operation.

The new deburring functionality in BobCAM for Rhino V2 allows users to generate toolpath to break the sharp edges around a given part with ease.
