Creating Stock Using an .STL File

Introduction

In this example you learn how to create stock using an .STL file. This example will also provide links to related topics.

Creating the Stock

The part model and the .stl model for this example are shown first.

 

 

Important: It is important that the part and the .stl file share the same location in the graphics area. The .stl file is placed in relation to the WCS (world coordinate system) origin using the same reference point as in the original file.

Part 1) Select the Stock Type

  1. To use an .stl file to create stock geometry, under Stock Type, select STL.

Part 2) Select the STL File

  1. To select the .stl file, under File Name, click Browse.

  2. The Open dialog box displays.

  3. Before selecting the .stl file, in the File Unit group, select the unit type that was used to create the .stl file.

    In this case, we use the default Inch setting.

  4. Navigate to the location in which the file is stored, and select the file.

  5. Click Open.

    The stock is created from the .stl file and displays in the graphics area with the stock coordinate system shown at the top and center of the stock.

    The name of the selected .stl file displays under File Name.



  6. Click (next) to go to the Machine Setup page.
