Deburr 4+1 Axis Example

Introduction

This tutorial explains how to create a Deburr operation and adjust that operation to output in 4 Axis.

Example File

The part file for this tutorial is available for download at: http://www.bobcad.com/helpfiles. If you are connected to the Internet, you can click the link provided to download and save the Deburr 4+1Axis Example.SLDPRT zip file. After extracting the zip file, you can then open the example file to use with this tutorial. In the example file provided, the Tool Crib is already equipped with the necessary tools and the stock and Machine Setup are already defined. The part is simulated using the BC_Hermie_C20U machine.

 

Part 1) Add the Feature

  1. In the Property Manager, click the CAM Tree tab.

  2. Right-click Machine Setup and click Mill Multiaxis.

  3. In the Multiaxis Wizard, click Deburring.

  4. Click Next>> to go to the Posting dialog box.

Part 2) Define the Posting Parameters

  1. The Work Offset # is automatically set to the value defined in the Machine Setup dialog box.

    You can change the value here to update the Work Offset # for the feature.

  2. Click Next>> to go to the Multiaxis Posting dialog box.

Part 3) Define the Multiaxis Posting Parameters

  1. Notice, at the top of the dialog box, that the Use Machine Settings check box is selected.

    This means that the Multiaxis Posting parameters for the feature use the same parameters as the machine that is selected in Current Settings.

    You can clear the Use Machine Settings check box to define the Multiaxis Posting parameters of the feature separately from the current machine settings.

    For this example, no changes are needed (more information is provided later).

  2. Click Next>> to go to the Tool page.

Part 4) Define the Tool Parameters

  1. In the Tool page, click Tool Crib.

    The Tool Crib dialog appears.

  2. Click ENDMILL FINISH and select the finishing tool.

    At the bottom of the dialog box, click OK.

  3. Click Next>> to go to the Parameters.

Part 5) Surface paths

  1. In the Geometry input group, click the ellipses button next to Part surfaces.

    The Mill Multiaxis wizard disappears and the Re/Select Geometry dialog opens.

  2. Select the check box for Select whole bodies.

  3. Select the model.



  4. Click OK.

    The Mill Multiaxis Wizard returns.

  5. In the Surface Quality group, set the Cut tolerance to 0.001.

    This will reduce the calculation time and can be adjusted after we obtain the desired result.

Part 6) Tool axis control

  1. At the top of the wizard, click the Tool axis control tab.

  2. In the Tilting group, set the Machining type to 4+1 axis (autotilt).

  3. Click Compute.


Part 7) Editing the feature

  1. Notice the toolpath along the back and top edges.

    For this example we will assume we need to avoid those due to how the part is held.

    Right-click the feature in the CAM Tree and select Edit.

  2. Click Parameters to jump to the Surface paths page.

  3. In the Geometry input group, click the ellipses button next to Exclude Edges.

    The Mill Multiaxis Wizard disappears and the Re/Select Geometry dialog opens allowing you to select edges to avoid cutting.

  4. Hover over the back edge as seen in the image below.



    With the edge highlighted, right-click and select Select Loop.



  5. Click the arrow to flip the loop selection.



  6. Select the edge along the outer diameter of the part as seen in the image below.



  7. Repeat this for the remaining edges.



  8. Click OK.

    The Mill Multiaxis Wizard returns.

  9. Click Compute.

Part 8) Simulation

  1. To view the program, in the Quick access menu of the CAM Tree, click Simulation.

  2. Click Play to view the current operation.



    Notice that while we are able to deburr many edges, the majority of the edges remain untouched.

  3. To close simulation, in the BobCAM menu, click Exit Simulation.

Part 9) Edit the feature

  1. In the CAM Tree, right-click the feature and select Edit.

  2. In the tree on the left of the wizard, click Parameters.

    The Surface paths page appears and the other tabs become available.

  3. Click the Tool axis control tab.

  4. In the Tilting group, set the Fixed angle to 30.

  5. Click Compute.



    Notice the additional places toolpath has automatically been placed now that we are using an angle that gives us access to additional edges.

  1. To view the program, in the Quick access menu of the CAM Tree, click Simulation.

  2. Click Play to view the current operation.



    Notice the operation able to cut all of the desired edges.

  3. To close simulation, in the BobCAM menu, click Exit Simulation.
