Getting Started with Post Processors
Your complete guide to understanding, finding, and using post processors in BobCAD-CAM.
What is a Post Processor?
A post processor (or "post") is a configuration file that translates the toolpath data generated by BobCAD-CAM into G-code that your specific CNC machine controller can understand and execute.
Think of it as a translator between BobCAD-CAM and your machine controller. Different machine controllers speak different "languages" of G-code, so each controller needs its own customized post processor.
Example: A Fanuc controller expects code formatted differently than a Haas, Mazak, or Siemens controller. The post processor ensures your G-code is formatted correctly for your specific machine.
How to Find a Post Processor for Your Machine
Step 1: Identify Your Machine Information
You'll need to know:
- Machine Type: Mill, Router, Lathe, Laser, Waterjet, Plasma, Wire EDM
- Controller Type: Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Siemens, Centroid, etc.
- Controller Model: Example: Fanuc 0i-MD, Haas NGC, Siemens 840D
- Axis Configuration: 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis, Mill-Turn, etc.
Step 2: Check Pre-Installed Posts
BobCAD-CAM comes with hundreds of pre-installed post processors. Check if yours is already installed:
- Open BobCAD-CAM
- Go to Job Setup → Machine
