Frequently Asked Questions

  1. My software will not post, what’s wrong?

    This may be caused by one of a few things. Below are the steps to troubleshoot the problem.

    STEP 1: Make sure you are selecting post from the correct location. To post you must right-click on Milling or Turning Stock, then choose Post as depicted below.

    A common mistake is to choose the Post Yes/No feature.

    This only specifies whether or not to be able to post or suppress the selected feature.

    STEP 2: The post processor may not be selected. In this case, Reselect the post processor in the CAM Tree to do so. Then right-click on the post name below stock geometry and left-click Reselect. Choose your post then try to post the code again.

    STEP 3: The post directory may be set as read only. Set up a machine file and set the post directory to a location that you have full write access to such as your documents folder (Windows does not grant write access to any folder in the program files directory).

  2. My software is crashing. How do I correct this?

    Software crashes usually pertain to one of a couple things. Below are troubleshooting steps that should resolve the issue.

    STEP 1: Make sure the system meets our minimum system requirements. If working with solid models and 3D work make sure your computer meets or exceeds our recommended system requirements.

    STEP 2: The Graphics card driver may be out of date. Even if the card or computer is new, the graphics card driver update can be done by going to the computer manufactures website or to the graphics card manufactures website. Below is a video that will show you how to update the driver.

    STEP 3: The windows system is out of date. BobCAD-CAM depends on windows for many of its functions If the windows system is out-dated this can cause system instability. The video above covers updating the Windows system.

    STEP 4: There are other things that may affect your BobCAD installation such as a high amount of running processes or lack of system resources due to malware. Antivirus software may help the issue or can even make it worse depending on the situation, If the above steps have not resolved your issue contact support at 727-489-0003. A current support plan is not required for Trouble shooting installations and software instability.

  3. My machine gives an error when running a program. What do I do?

    An error can be one of many issues. Below are steps that may resolve the problem.

    STEP 1: Write down the exact error and gather all information available about the error. Often the machine manual will describe the problem and offer a solution, even if it does not if a call to support is made having this information available will save time.

    STEP 2: If the post processor being used is known to work on the machine and the error is arc or center point position related the issue is most likely to be related the geometry that has been posted. Make sure that the geometry is clean, try using the make arcs tangential function, you can also try exploding the geometry using the explode command then reselect your geometry, re-compute the tool path then repost the code. If the post processor is not a known working post-processor check the code output for compatibility with your machine. If the code needs changes submit a post request form to support here.

    STEP 3: If the above has not worked and you have a current support membership Email [email protected], include your G-code file and the BobCAD file (with tool-path) used to create the code. If you do not have a current support membership please post the files on the BobCAD-CAM Forum for a technician or fellow BobCAD-CAM user to review.

  4. How do I send a file to the machine?

    After creating a program in BobCAD-CAM there are two ways to send the program to the machine.

    Option 1: By Disk or Network Drive

    The file extension will need to be configured properly for the machine to read the file.

    To set the machine extension right-click on Milling or Turning tools, choose current settings then machine, edit the NC File extension to the proper extension for your machine. If you are unsure of what extension to use consult the machine manual or call the machine dealer.

    Then use post and save to save the file to the appropriate drive. To do this right click on Milling or Turning tools then choose Post & Save As.

    Option 2: RS-232

    STEP 1: Gather all necessary data.

    Print & review the RS-232 Communication Document.

    Print & Complete the RS-232 Checklist.

    In order to set up the communications you must first have the following information.

    • Baud Rate:
    • Data Bits:
    • Stop Bits:
    • Parity:
    • Flow Control:
    • The Computer’s COM Port Number:

    STEP 2: Ensure the serial cable correctly configured.

    The cable must be properly configured “wired” for your machine. Cables can be purchased through BobCAD-CAM or through your machine dealer.

    STEP 3: Make sure your serial port is installed correctly configured. The serial port should have its own baud, parity, data bits, and flow control. These settings must be set to match your machine settings.

    To access the Device Manager, use any of the following methods:

    • Click Start; click Run, and then type “devmgmt.msc” (without the quotation marks).
    • Right-click My Computer, the click Properties, then click on the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

    To check the COM Port Properties:

    • In the device manager look under Ports>COMM and LPT right click the comm port then left click on Properties. (You should now be able to view and change the settings.)

    STEP 4: Set your machine to Receive.

    • If you are not sure how to do this you will need to consult your machine manual or dealer.

    STEP 5: Launch the communication software (Predator Editor).

    To launch the editor use any of the following methods:

    • From BobCAD click on Modules then Edit CNC.
    • From BobCAD right click in the Posting Manager then left click Edit.
    • From the Windows desktop Double Click the Predator Editor Shortcut.

    STEP 6: Configure the communication software (Predator Editor).

    From the editor click on DNC then Properties set the Port, Baud, Parity, Data, Stop and Flow Control Values.

    Click Next 4 times then click finish. (The settings on all but the first page need not be changed. Only the Values described above.)

    STEP 7: Send a file to the Machine.

    From the editor click on DNC then Send To CNC.

    Trouble Shooting Notes:

    1. A “standard” RS-232 null modem cable from an electronics store will not work. The cable must be wired properly for the machine.
    2. The cable must be a serial cable. A parallel cable will not work.
    3. USB to serial adapters can be problematic. An internal serial card is always a better solution.
    4. If you do not know the proper settings for your machine, contact your machine manufacturer as they will be able to provide the proper settings to you.
    5. If no port appears in the device manager, you will need to install or reinstall your serial port device.
      If using a USB to serial adapter (not recommended!), ensure the driver disk has been loaded and the settings (baud, parity, data bits and flow control) are the same as set on your machine.
    6. If the cable is improperly configured sometimes it is possible to send but not receive, and vice versa.
    7. If running in a DNC mode you may need to include a line delay amount. Set this value to 0 for standard RS-232 communication.
  5. The feed rates are wrong how do I change them?

    The feed rates are set up in the material library. To edit these feeds follow the instruction in this video. If the material is already configured and still not posting out correct this may be due to the maximum speeds set in the current settings. To change this, right-click on Milling Tools then choose Current Settings, choose Machine and make sure the Maximum spindle speed and Maximim Feed rate are set to your desired setting.

  6. Where do I find updates?

    Updates can be found here, You can check the build number of the software your currently running by clicking on Help then About BobCAD-CAM, the build number is shown in the top right.

  7. I just got the software, how do I learn how to use it?

  8. How do I find and install a post processor?

    Post processors and complete instructions can be found here.

  9. How do I add tools?

    To add a new tool to BobCAD-CAM right clicking on milling tools or lathe tools then choose tools. Below is a video that shows how to add tools to BobCAD-CAM.

  10. My copy my BobCAD settings from one computer to another?

    There are several folders and files that will need to be transferred from one computer to another. Below is a list of the files you may want to transfer.

    • Post processors: C:\BobCAD-CAM Data\BobCAD-CAM V#\Posts
    • Material Files: C:\BobCAD-CAM Data\BobCAD-CAM V#\MillingTechnology
    • Tools: C:\BobCAD-CAM Data\BobCAD-CAM V#\MillingTechnology\Tools

    Copy the folders named above from the original computer and overwrite the files on the new computer.
