Tech Tuesday: Surface and Solid Selection for Turning in V9 2 Axis Lathe

Tech Tuesday is a weekly blog that addresses some of the most common questions and concerns that I hear throughout the previous week from users of BobCAD’s CNC software. Both customers and future customers are more than welcome to leave a comment on what they would like to see covered for the following Tech Tuesday.

In BobCAM for SOLIDWORKS V9  you can select a sketch for the geometry of your turning operations, but you also can select surfaces. The first method is selecting a wireframe or a whole sketch from the feature tree to create a turning operation on either the outer diameter or the inner diameter.

When selecting geometry, we have a few options that help find the OD or ID profile. These two options are selecting a turning operation with a sketch, or wireframe of the solid, and then selecting the surfaces of the solid to be turned down. You can deselect part of the wireframe or part of the surfaces of the solid to specify exactly the amount of material to be turned down in this operation.

You can also select the sketch or the solid directly from the feature tree of Solidworks.

This next example is a groove operation. I selected only the surfaces where there is still remaining geometry to be turned down. That way, we can optimize the toolpath and reduce cycle times on the machine.

The next operation we will be reviewing is a drilling operation for this part. I can either select the edge of the hole, a sketch for the diameter of the hole, or the sleeve of the hole from the solid model. Selecting the sleeve of the hole is the ideal option. That way, Solidworks and BobCAM automatically understand the diameter of the hole as well as the top of feature and total depth of the drilling operation based on the geometry selected from the surface of the solid model.
